How to Make Your Social Media a Positive Experience
When I think of social media so many thoughts come to mind . . . is it good, bad, just trying to sell me things, waste of my time, why am I on here, should I set myself rules, I like to see what my friends are up to and many more. Oftentimes, I get trapped in what my husband call the “phone zone” but I have found a few tricks to keep my social media time a positive experience.
Lately, I prefer if social media makes me smile, laugh, or feel better about humanity. To do that, I’ve made an effort to positively upgrade my social media experience without unfollowing any accounts. This works for most platforms. They all have algorithms that perform slightly differently but each one pays attention to what you like and what you watch and they show you more of that.
If social media brings you down, or does’t make you smile give this a try. Start with the platform you use the most and then use it on the others too.
5 Easy Steps to Make Sure Your Social Media Experience is Positive
1. Make a list of things that you would like to see on social media. It can be anything, from more friends, cute dogs, tennis, mountains, baby animals, quotes, funny memes, sunsets, astrology, skiing . . . anything you are interested in or you think would bring more joy to your day
2. Now open your go to social media platform and instead of scrolling go straight to search and type in one of those thing on your list. Like and comment on a few of the images or videos that come up. Do this again two or three time with other words on your list
3. Go back to your feed and don’t get caught up in it (this may be a little hard). Quickly scroll past anything that does’t bring you joy or make you smile. Just do it, scroll right past that political post that you usually read, scroll past the political statement and only stop to look at what you had on your list or friends that you want to keep seeing. Use your news apps for news and social media for fun!
4. Do this for the rest of the week. It’s one week, it might be hard to scroll past those thing that usually take you down a rabbit hole, but do it anyway.
5. Continue the same directions on all other social platforms that you use.
You’ll start to notice that only the things you want to see will show up. My social media feed is a lot of cute animals, uplifting quotes, good news and friends, and I don’t feel bad about myself or the world after looking at it.
Good Luck and Happy Scrolling!
