Tips for a Road Trip with Your Dog
Taking a road trip with your dog, this is what we do to keep Arley comfortable.
We love to bring our dog with us on road trips! Although, we know long road trips can be stressful for your dog. We try to take Arley with us when we can and this is how we make it easy on her and us.
Before any long road trip make sure your dog is used to the car. If you don’t take them very many places, start by having them ride around in the car for quick errands. Your dog should to be used to the car before attempting to take them on a long road trip. Our dog, Arley, likes to run errands with me and as long as it’s not too hot outside I just leave her in the car while I grab dry cleaning or run into the store.
Extra exercise before we the road trip is a must! If it’s an all day road trip we usually take her to doggie day care the day before we go. She gets to play all day and is generally tired the following day which means she’s happy to sleep most of the time. If the car ride isn’t too long, under 6 hours, we’ll go on an extra long walk or play frisbee before we leave. Dogs definitely need to have some exercise before sitting in the car for hours.
What to bring
Bring a new chew toy or bone. For long trips we usually leave super early in the morning and Arley will easily go back to sleep for a bit. Eventually she wakes up and is ready to play and that’s when we will give her a new toy, peanut butter bone or antler. The important part is have something they can chew or lick that will keep them occupied for an hour or two.
Make sure to bring your pups favorite blanket and toys, have the blanket laid out and a toy or 2 back there so they feel comfortable
Bring food and water and have it within reach. If you leave early have their breakfast ready for when they wake up if your dog didn’t eat before you get in the car. Have travel water on hand so you can them have a drink. Also have some paper towels or a doggy clean up towel close by to clean up spills and crumbs.
Road Trip Rest Stops for Your Dog
Depending on how far you are going plan a little hike or walk every few hours. We regularly stop at rest stops to use the bathroom and walk Arley around. Most of the rest stops I have been to have a grass area for dogs. Depending on where we are going we will also look up little hike that not far off the road and sometimes take an hour break. We go for a little hike, have a picnic and get back in the car. Alltrails is great for finding out about hikes in unfamiliar areas. If you just stop at fast food and gas stations it might be hard to let your dog out.
Remember that you wanted to bring them, so try to make sure they are comfortable too. The drive might take a little longer, but sometimes that’s what road trips are all about
Below are some road trips that we have done our dog!
